Hula Hoop Buyers Guide

Exercise Hoop

If you are looking for a hula hoop then you might have noticed that there are several to choose from and figuring out which one is perfect for you might seem a tad difficult. Well I am here to make that easy for you. This hula hoop buyer's guide will steer you in the correct direction and have you spinning in no time.

Let me point out something first. If you are pregnant or if you have back or hip problems then hula hooping is not for you! With that out of the way, let's get started.

The lighter the hula hoop, the harder it is to keep going. This can make it difficult to even start but the up side is that you get more of a workout. If you pick a hula that is too heavy then you can hurt yourself. This is how you find that perfect balance.

You need to choose a hula hoop based on your size. If you stand the hula on it's side, it should come up somewhere between your hips and chest. Choose your height below.

If you are just starting out, then get a hoop that is the correct size for your weight. As you master this hoop then you can get a lighter weight hoop for even more of a workout.

Ridges or smooth hula?

Some hula hoops have ridges along the inside. These ridges are a patented feature that makes hooping easier.

Hula hoops with ridges.

The Pros: Those ridges are there for a reason. They are there to make it easier to get the hoop going and keep it going for extended periods of time. These are great for beginners or anyone that has had trouble getting a hula hoop up and spinning. They cost the same as a smooth hula hoop.

The Cons: Some people have reported light bruising on their hips from weighted hula hoops with ridges. You have to make sure that you choose the right size hula hoop to begin with. If you have a hula hoop that is the right size and weight, you should not have any problems. If you feel that you bruise easily then a Hula hoop with ridges is not for you.

Smooth Hula Hoops

The Pros: Smooth hula hoops are less likely to cause bruising like a hula hoop with ridges does. You can expect to find them in the same price range as their counterparts. Smooth hoops will also give you just as much of a workout as a ridged one. If you bruise easily then a smooth hoop is what you need!

The Cons: Smooth hoops can be more difficult to get started especially for beginners but once you get them going it becomes second nature. It took me a little while to get it going but it was fun! If you tend to give up on things easily then a smooth sided hula hoop is not for you!

Have fun hooping!
